Russian scientists will develop battery for sensors
7 June 2020Researchers at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) approached the creation of solid-state thin-film batteries for miniature devices and sensors. The results of the study have been published in a special issue prepared for materials developed for lithium and sodium ion batteries (Energies Journal, MDPI Publishing House).
The development of miniature devices such as biosensors, smart watches, internet of things (IoT) devices requires the installation of small and complex power supplies with high energy density. According to experts, traditional technologies for lithium-ion battery production are reaching their limits. It is difficult to reduce the size at the required limits and control the shape of the power supply. However, the use of microelectronic technologies such as Atomic Layer Deposition can assist in the production of miniature solid state lithium-ion batteries with high specific energy.
“Using the Atomic Layer Deposition method, which allows the thickness of the films to be adjusted with high precision, we were able to obtain the cathode material, lithium nikelate,” said Dr. Maxim Maximov.
He also noted that the researchers showed high specific capacities at increasing discharge current. This result can increase the performance and efficiency of the devices and reduce their size.
According to the scientist, the production of thin film positive electrodes based on lithium nikelate and lithium mixed oxides with high nickel content is a big step in creating efficient solid state batteries that are safe because they do not contain liquid electrolytes.
